Abstract

This study examined the role of e-government procurement systems in promoting sustainable procurement in Edo State, Nigeria, focusing on e-registration, e-tendering, e-evaluation, and e-award. Employing a quantitative research design, the study targeted a population of 512 procurement officials and registered vendors. Data were collected from 225 respondents using a structured questionnaire, yielding 200 valid and usable responses for analysis. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis were conducted using SPSS version 22.0 to assess the impact of these digital procurement components on sustainability outcomes. Findings revealed that while e-registration and e-evaluation significantly improve transparency, efficiency, and compliance with sustainability principles, e-tendering, and e-award showed no significant impact due to systemic inefficiencies, weak enforcement of sustainability criteria, and resistance to digital adoption. The study recommends that the Edo State government enhance e-registration frameworks, optimise e-tendering platforms, strengthen e-evaluation mechanisms, improve e-award procedures by embedding sustainability criteria into supplier qualification processes, simplifying user interfaces, integrating multilingual support, and establishing responsive help desk services, deploying AI-based bid evaluation tools and automated sustainability scoring metrics, through real-time contract tracking systems, digital compliance alerts, and performance dashboards.
